The men of God fall by the score, what makes us think we'll win this war?
In thick of night, the battles rage, what antidote will disengage,
from fear of death, from dread of pain? What makes us live to fight again?
The Light of Life within our souls, the righteous cause, which He extols?
His clarion call, brings us to war, and we know what we're fighting for!
But night has fallen, we've done our best, He bids us now to come and rest!
Morning brings another day, safe in our beds we'd gladly stay,
awakened from a restless sleep, by a standard we are called to keep.
Still, sore from battle, body and heart, not eager with our rest to part,
We battle flesh that would sleep on, our battle gear we find and don!
Taking up both sword and shield, to stubborn flesh we will not yield!
Truth's been entrusted to our keeping, He must not come to find us sleeping!
Stepping fresh into the light, still shaking off the wool of night,
darkness fleeing as we stride, we find Him and we walk beside -
His inspiration lifts our soul, as on Himself our worries roll!
Next to Him there is no fear, we'll conquer when the King is near!
Step by step His strength imparted to aching, fearful, broken-hearted,
Courage comes, like second wind, giving hope to fight again!
So up to war stout men of faith! Up! His righteous cause embrace!
Put the sorry flesh to cross, despising all the seeming loss.
What loss? When evil all infects, when seeming "good" is all suspect!
No loss! The flesh has nothing good! It mocked and mimicked all it could.
But much to gain by following, the Good and Righteous King of kings!
Much to gain by fighting on, the victory sure, already won!
Shake off the slumber, ignore the fear, our Champion, the Lord, is here!
Let's rally to His victory call, He's done the work to conquer all!
Let's take His banner, raise it high! And raise our voices to the sky,
In praise to Him, for He is Good! Let's follow closely as we should -
until the battle's all been won, and then rejoicing in the Son,
we'll rest for real, no more to roam, we'll sit with Him in our new home!
No more we'll fight with flesh and sin, for there'll be nothing more to win!
We'll have it all, and want no more, we'll never suffer - sick or sore,
His blood has conquered death and sin, we'll never have to die again!
Our victory will be complete, and we can worship at His feet,
and enter all the wonders there, His love and joy and peace to share -
Forever healed and whole and free, let's fight on for that Victory!
