(Inspired by “My Utmost for His Highest” for November the 26th)

The feebleness of the church is being criticized today, and the criticism is justified. One reason for the feebleness is that there has not been this focus on the true center of spiritual power. We have not dwelt enough on the tragedy of Calvary or on the meaning of redemption.” ~ Oswald Chambers, (MUFHH)

I keep saying that! Instead of futile efforts to defend ourselves we – the ones who consider ourselves to be “The Church”, “The Ecclessia”, “The Called-out of God” for His purposes on the earth – need to be investigating the causes of the litigations which have been brought against us. We need not fear that process! If they are true, there will be correction and restitution made on our behalf. If they are false they will fall to the ground and do no harm!

There are false and unreasonable accusations on occasion. Of course! That is what our enemy does best! And we are to exercise enough discernment to know when to let them roll off, or when to address them or refute them on the spiritual plain. The Word says that we should have an answer for those who inquire about, or even challenge, what it is that we claim to believe. Our ability to answer those questions and challenges is proof that we do believe, or how well we know what we claim to believe, how well it has been assimilated by our being, whether it has truly become a living part of us. But the Word also instructs us that our “war is not with flesh and blood”, that we need not engage in conflict with our fellow man. We are to target the correct enemy.

It would be great if we were never guilty of misrepresenting His Word to the world! It would be great if no fault were ever found in God's people. However, unfortunately, due to the inherent ability of we humans, of our lower nature (which is not all yet conquered) to totally subvert and pervert the Word and Work of God, there are some valid complaints against us, which require that we humbly take the responsibility of seeking God for righteous judgment, correction, as well as for restitution to those who are bringing the complaints against us, on our behalf! How can we expect to grow in Grace, Love and the other proof of the transformation of the higher life in us, if we never confront the workings of the lower life! How can we ever hope to obtain His character, if we constantly refuse to acknowledge the flaws of our “natural” human character – which has been flawed by sin – and which must be “put down” - so that our renewed spirit-man can thrive, reign and do exploits in His Name, and for His Glory!

How can we expect to command the respect of the world, and walk in His Authority if we never find the Chutzpah to own up to our mistakes, sins, and flaws! We must stop hiding behind our religious veneers and face our fallen natures head on, and be humble enough to receive His correction and discipline! Instead of the usual head in the clouds, pride cloaked in religiously presumed immunity, and often deliberate ignorance of the issues at hand! We can not afford to have a “deer in the head-lights” attitude! We are instructed to be on the alert! That is not a part-time employment! It is a state of mind that we must cultivate and maintain until we are delivered from this sin-infested planet! Something that is most helpful in keeping this awareness, without becoming self-absorbed, is to keep a sharp and unswerving focus on the Atonement, and the resulting Anointing provided by our LORD.

As in a treasure hunt X is said to mark the spot on the map, our X is the Cross of our LORD. Had He not suffered there, and overcome there, there would be no hope of us ever managing, much less defeating, the fallibleness of our human nature. There would be no means of us ever hoping to obtain the character, the righteousness of an all-knowing, all-loving God! Frequently the Torah is spoken of as treasure! Indeed it is full of His nuggets of wisdom, full of keys that take us ever deeper into His mysteries, keys that unlock the gates of the deeper, inner recesses of His Kingdom, where He is most at home. Yeshua was the Torah made flesh! He was the personification of it. In Him the purposes and plans became alive! They took on real meaning, and became the light for our path to God, the path to Home

We all inherently long to be Home. There is something innate in each of us that draws us toward our place of origin, that desperately seeks that place where we can experience a true sense of belonging. From early childhood we experience a sense of being somehow alien to this life, a profound sense of not belonging anywhere, of not relating to anyone at at times. That is the cause of much suffering at holidays, especially “Christmas”, when the perfect “Currier and Ives” images invoke a sense of longing for something which we have never really been able to achieve. Or, if we have achieved it, we haven't been able to maintain it or duplicate it. And we ache. Some are so affected by the emptiness that they are sucked into the black hole and never seen again.

This pervasive emptiness which haunts our dreams, troubling our sleep and afflicting our alone time when we are awake – is like a threatening specter in a horror movie. It can never be dissolved, or escaped, without the help of the one who knows the source of it. It has been said that there is a God shaped vacuum in the soul of every man created, that can only be filled with Him. Might I suggest that that hole would be the shape of the cross? A quick internet study of a substance called “Laminin”, especially the message by a fellow named “Lou Giglio”, will clear up why I might think that. The Atonement work of the Anointed One was conceived in the heart of God before we even made it necessary. I am not sure at this point if it was “plan b” or The Plan all along, but I know that it is the way home for those of us who find ourselves searching for home today.

When we find the God of the Universe, the One who created us and knows us better than anyone possibly could; When we find that His love for us knows no limits; When we find that we are accepted because of the atonement, and that the atonement was His idea to redeem us; When we find that He was willing to pay the ransom price for a people that rebelliously sold themselves; When we finally stop searching and realize that we have been found, that we need not be lost anymore, that we are claimed, wanted, understood and longed for...there is a fulfillment that comes! A peace. Shalom, shalom!

That is when the nightmares turn to dreams, and the emptiness dissipates to a feeling of utter acceptance and belonging! We find then, that the darkest of nights are filled with stars, and our longing for home now has a direction. We realize then, that we have truly found the treasure of the universe, and all we find that, all along, the Cross marked the spot.... we had the map the whole time! If that doesn't spark some Thanksgiving then, as the old preacher used to say, “your wood is just plain wet”! Chag Sameach Chanukah, and Thanksgiving!
