The Real Gift of Chanukah and Christmas
It is sad to me that we humans have to make everything about us. We can not seem to let God have anything! I was watching PBS's latest Kid's offerings on the Rootle Channel. There was a show about Chanukah. They said NOTHING about the miraculous event, that was totally orchestrated by God, around which this holiday was formed. It was all about the lights and presents and the dreidel game! The secondary miracle that tells the reason for the lights was not even alluded to! Nor were the symbols on the dreidels explained!
The same was true of their “Christmas” presentation. They sang bits of relevant carols, but changed the lyrics on anything that made reference to God or The Christ which “Christmas” was meant to celebrate! It too was all about gifts, secrets, and SANTA!
There IS also a great story behind the Santa legend, which my children got to hear about every year. But, since that story too was about a GOD-FEARING man who just wanted to help poor children, that isn't brought up much! He has been turned into a mystical Elf, who sees all, knows all, and grants wishes! Wow. Incredibly disappointing.
What are we afraid of? Why does the idea of a loving God spook us out? Why can we not bring ourselves to acknowledge Him? Why are we intent on wiping Him from our history and all our traditions and celebrations?!
The “Church” isn't quite as bad as the world, but honestly, the idolatry, along with the selective ignorance of GOD's appointed times and their eternal meaning for Israel – which includes, but is NOT limited to, those grafted in by the Grace and Sacrifice of The Anointed Yeshua! We, the majority of mainline "Christianity" are ignorant of the time, and the real season, of His actual birth.
We are not interested in the High Holy Days celebrated, still, by all of Israel, which our Savior Himself celebrated when He was here! Sort of indicating that HE found them significant! We justify our ignorant disobedience by hiding behind His Grace! That is adding insult to injury! Grace was never intended as a camouflage for sin and disobedience, or apathetic negligence of God's Word, Will and ways!
So we do not find His Holy Days, which Yeshua faithfully significant because? I suggest that it is due to what Timothy called “doctrines of demons”. A gross misrepresentation of Grace! Matthew chapter five tells of Yeshua Himself said that, “If we love Him we will keep HIS commandments”. And HE kept GOD's commandments – not the Rabbinically extended and amended versions! But what God actually said through Moses! But HE put the emphasis on LOVE – He said that if we walk in the LOVE of GOD that we can not break His law! But, on the other end, if we fail to love we will never rise to His standards. Motive matters! The law is not a simple set of rules. It is a way of life. It is intentional, joyful, willing obedience to a trusted Father, a Reverenced God, a faithful Savior – with the help of His ever present Spirit.
It is time that we sought GOD, and learned His heart on how His Word should be lived out. It is time we actually cared what HE thinks, how He wants HIS HOLY DAYS to be celebrated! The flesh has been in control long enough. We, in “the church” are supposed to die to the flesh and live to the spirit! But to do that we need to stop feeding the flesh it's preferences over top of God's commands! I'm not talking legalism! I'm talking obedience! But we can't obey what we don't know! And we can't know if we don't attend Him in a sincere effort to discern His heart!
The bottom line of both Chanukah and Christmas is a loving God, who reached down into the human dilemma to bring deliverance and victory against a vitriolic enemy intent on wiping out His people, His definition of Faith, and His idea of Holiness! We exist because of His Love. That is what we should be celebrating! Getting things we want is great. But the greatest gift any of us can get this holiday season is the gift of His never failing love.
Chag Sameach Chanukah, Merry Christmas . . . Happy Holidays . . . Shalom Haverim,
